Bubba Watson walked to the par-3 16th hole at the Travelers Championship with a two-shot lead. He left the green trailing by one after carding a triple-bogey.
The 2012 Masters champion put his tee shot in the water and sailed his drop over the green en route to the tournament-killing six. And it was all his caddie’s fault, at least according to the golfer’s on-course comments. Bubba sarcastically complained to Ted Scott after both shots, asking petty, rhetorical questions about Scott’s questionable club selections. Both were caught by CBS cameras.
Later, Bubba picked up his own bag as he left the 16th hole, acting like he was going to carry his clubs for the final two holes. He didn’t. Scott finished the round on the bag.
Bubba must have realized the childish behavior and tweeted semi-responsibility after finishing two shots out of a playoff.
Ahh, but who picked the wrong club?
Bubba has no reason to whine about Scott. The caddie there to assist but it’s on Bubba to hit the shot. Did Scott get credit for hitting a miracle snap-hook off the pine straw at the Masters? If not, he doesn’t deserve the blame when an iron plunks into the water.
There was some chatter in the golf world that Bubba will lose fans after this outburst, but I’m skeptical. Regular golfers can’t relate to the 350-yard drives and precision putting. Blaming other people for your own awful golf shots? We can relate to that.
