Earlier this week, Cuban television aired a two-month-old game between the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves that was believed to be the country’s first full airing of a Major League Baseball game since 1961.
When you’ve waited 50 years to see MLB, what’s two more months, right?
The Associated Press reports the game, which was won by the Nationals, was run without commercials and lasted only 90 minutes. Commentary from Cuban analysts was piped in over the American broadcast.
None of the country’s top exports was on display, a fact which disappointed Cubans hoping to see the country’s stars, some of whom weren’t yet in the majors. (Yasiel Puig’s debut wouldn’t come until later in the month. At this pace, Cuba will show a replay of that game in 2019.)
Cuban Yunesky Maya was on the Nationals roster at the time but didn’t pitch.
The whole thing may not have been on the up-and-up, according to the AP.
