A heads-up play was a key factor in Homer Bailey’s second no-hitter.
In the seventh inning of Reds pitcher Homer Bailey’s no-hitter against the San Francisco Giants, Giants star Buster Posey hit a broken bat blooper towards first baseman Joey Votto. Votto fielded the ball and checked to first, only to find that no one was covering the bag.
It appeared that Posey would reach base easily, thus ending the no-hitter.
But Votto saw something out of the corner of his eye. It was Giants baserunner Gregor Blanco, who had drifted off second and was making his way towards third. Votto fired the ball to third base, and the Reds captured Blanco in a pickle, eventually tagging him out. Here’s the play:
By tossing to third, Votto turned what looked like an infield single for Posey into a fielder’s choice play, thus negating the hit and keeping the no-hitter alive.
Pay attention, kids. It’ll do you wonders.
