When most sports fans picture NASCAR star Jimmie Johnson, it’s in the long-sleeved blue, black and white Lowe’s driver’s suit he’s sported since winning his first Sprint Cup championship in 2006.
But the five-time champion, who’s known for keeping his cool and controlling his image, bared a different side of himself recently during a cover shoot for Men’s Fitness magazine. Posing in jeans and tight tee shirts, Johnson explained in a behind-the-scenes video that auto racers are more than just drivers, they are endurance athletes too.
He then provided visual evidence of just how physically fit he is, as he was filmed in sleeveless spandex cycling wear while pedaling away on a bicycle.
And Johnson isn’t just talk. The 5-11, 175-pound native Californian competed in a triathlon in Palm Springs, Calif., on the morning after the Sprint Cup awards ceremony in Las Vegas last November. Two months ago while preparing for NASCAR’s biggest race, Johnson drove in the Sprint Unlimited all-star race on a Saturday night, woke up the next morning and ran the Daytona Beach Half Marathon, then climbed back in his car to qualify for the Daytona 500 the same day.
A week later, Johnson claimed his second Daytona 500 win.
