On Sunday, sports fans will get a chance to see two of the most unique playing surfaces in sports. The French Open begins in Paris hours before gentlemen and ladies start their engines at the Indianapolis 500.
Coincidentally, it’s brick that gives each venue its distinct surface. A 36-inch strip of bricks marks the finish line at the speedway, while the red clay at Roland Garros is made from crushed brick.
This got us thinking about other great fields in sports. Here’s our list of the nine most unique. And remember, we’re ranking playing surfaces, not the stadiums that contain them.
